Recycling in Kanata – it does a Community Good

Posted on October 23rd, 2014

This week the Canadian Community Support Foundation (CCFS) is holding a food and clothing drive that will directly help the community of Kanata. Here’s how: For every bag of recyclable clothing that is donated, one dollar will go right back into the community via a partnership with Kanata Food Cupboard. CCSF is also collecting and delivering non-perishable food items for the Kanata Food Cupboard.

Kanata Food Cupboard

Helping your community has never been easier; we all have clothes we don’t wear, that don’t fit, or towels that have been hanging around far longer than they are useful. Do a scan in your cupboards and closets. Collect all these types of items, put them into a bag and drop them into one of CCSF’s clothing donation bins located in Kanata. Or, bring it to Hazeldean Mall (300 Eagleson Road) this Saturday, October 25, between 10am and 2pm, we’ll be there to help you make your donation.

And there is one more easy way to get involved, as part of the Kanata Food Cupboard drive, CCSF is providing home-pick service (call 613-216-2603 to arrange your pick up.)  There is no reason to throw old clothing away, recycle it and help out too.

Some clothing drive facts:

  1. We strive to collect 5,000 pounds of clothing and textiles at each drive
  2. Each bag of clothing weighs about 15 to 20 pounds, often we exceed our goal
  3. Almost 100% of everything we collected is re-used or recycled
    • 45% is re-used
    • 30% is recycled into industrial cloths
    • 20% is recycled into fibres used for upholstery and that kind of thing
  4. And the best part, the textiles are kept out of landfill, which is very good for our planet.

The more clothing we collect, the more money is raised for your community. Now’s the time for you to purge your closets of clothes that don’t fit, are never used and are basically just collecting dust – and put them to work for your community.

At CCSF our mandate is to provide safety net for those at risk of falling through the cracks.  In addition to our own efforts to feed and clothe Canadians in need, we provide assistance to existing charities within our communities. Our primary source of funding is through clothing donation boxes. By donating your unwanted clothing and other textiles, you are helping support our community efforts. Our bins are fully liability insured and are meticulously maintained.

Contact us for more information about hosting your own community clothing drive, and learn how you can make it work for your organization, school, team or neighbourhood, while helping the most vulnerable in our community.
